There are really two types of powder check systems- mechanical, and visual. Mechanical powder check systems come in the various forms of powder check die systems (I’ll cover each in detail in subsequent blog posts). The visual powder check system is only reliable if you use a powder that fills the case more than half way, which will result in an overflow if there is a double charge. Note that the visual system will not prevent squib loads (no powder) if you happen to forget to look in a case when the powder system is not working or empty.

Within the same brand the magnum primer should burn hotter than the standard. If you already have loads worked up that work well for you just reduce the powder charge one or two tenths grain when switching to magnum primers and test them. You may find that it makes a slight difference or maybe none at all. You will probably only notice a difference if you are shooting full power loads.

Luckily I’ve always saved ammo given to me or left over from guns I pelo longer have and have been reloading the primer cups themselves which federal primer copyright is a time consuming process and carries several risks if one is not careful with the primer compound…but that method has been how I’ve been able to keep reloading my 45 acp more info all you do is unload the compound from whatever ammo you choose but be extremely careful and wear saftey glasses that stuff is easy to set off! I’ve detonated a few scraping out the compound with a saftey pin but I’ve gotten pretty good at it now, then cut a drinking straw and seal one end with a lighter(do this before unloading or touching primers or the compound) cut the tip at an angle and scoop the compound up and crunch it to its powder form in the straw gently, have some spent primers with the anvils removed and the dent inside the bottom of the primer hammered back to flat with a small punch, tap the straw to dump in enough powder to fill the primer gently pack it down and it should be about half full, place a piece of paper over the compound and pack down one more time, then place the anvil on top of the paper and try to center it as best you can but don’t push it in, stick the primer in the loader on your press one at a time and load into a case the press will press the anvil in to the primer and if you don’t he man it in there it’ll set it in perfect and not set off the primer compound.

All of these rifle powders are the extruded type IMR 4350 pellet type shown above. If you have some round such as a 30-378 or something similar then you might need something slower, but personally I don’t see much use for such rounds. There are several ways to make reduced loads. One way is to use a powder that is so slow that it can’t build up enough pressure to stress an old rifle. An example is the 45-70 types of cases in black powder guns. A case full of 4831 reloading powder won’t generate excess pressure, but make sure there is little or pelo airspace as that will cause inconsistency and can be dangerous in some instances.

I would suggest Ebay for lead and bid on as much lead as you ca…and keep on top of the bidding…guys will slide in at the last moment and get a decent buy on lead and yup…I’ve done it too!! You have to.

The load may not be the most consistent but depending on the round and components it can be pretty good. While not the best option reduced loads, using 4831 gun powder can be used in some bottleneck cases, but again care should be taken if you want mild loads. A 308 case can’t hold enough 4831 powder to generate serious pressure especially with light bullets.
